Growing Up White on Wilson. A one-act play

Listen Learn Act invites you to "Growing Up White on Wilson" — A One-act play written and performed by Don Ray Smith.

This 50-minute live, one-man play offers the audience two things:

  1. An honest history lesson. Many people assume Louisville’s West End has always been the way it is now, in 2025. ‘Growing Up’ sets the record straight. It is a historical tale that shows how the West End of Louisville changed drastically in the mid-20th century, largely because of ‘White Flight.”

  2. A non-confrontational narrative. ‘Growing Up’ shows how bigotry and prejudice are taught, allowed to breed and exist. Its messages are just as relevant today as they were 60 years ago.

Don Ray Smith plays multiple characters to tell his true boyhood story.  Smith has performed ‘Growing Up’ at Louisville’s Roots-101 African American MuseumThe Russell Theater, The Academy at Shawnee and other venues.

“Growing Up White on Wilson” has been described as “honest,” “thought-provoking,” “unforgettable” and “a perfect teaching tool.”
